Serving the professional interests of pilots and pilotage throughout Australasia

Welcome to AMPI

The Australasian Marine Pilots Institute is the professional body representing marine pilots throughout Australasia. It assists in the setting of standards, safety management and provides support and guidance with ongoing professional development.

AMPI provides advice to regulators on how to improve operational safety in our ports, and ensures that member pilots and their organisations continue to lead in world’s best practice. Together with its partners, AMPI has developed a set of training standards for both initial and continual training for pilots. As a partner of the International Marine Pilots Association, AMPI also has input into all important decisions made by the International Maritime Organisation

AMPI would like to congratulate our colleagues and fellow IMPA members at the NZMPA on the conclusion of their very successful Conference. The Conference, held in Auckland focused on the theme of Due Diligence in Pilotage, a subject which is closely aligned with AMPI’s ethos.
A variety of speakers were heard from including SME in the field of Risk and Due Diligence, Reporting Cultures and Threat and Error Management. A number of fascinating presentations were made by Conference Sponsors, showcasing the latest developments in technology and the use of “big data”. It was especially pleasing to learn, during a presentation by the ATSB, that Australian Pilotage had been removed from the ATSB SafetyWatch.
The Conference concluded with a Workshop which continued the excellent progress that our NZMPA colleagues have made in developing the Good Practice Guide for Pilots, a world leading document on the subject of good practice and pilotage.
AMPI look forward to welcoming NZMPA and indeed pilots from all over the Asia Pacific (and further afield!) to our own Conferences in Hobart & Perth in 2023.
Well done NZMPA!
