The Australasian Marine Pilots Institute (AMPI) is the peak professional body representing marine pilots throughout Australia and Papua New Guinea. AMPI advocates for the highest standards of safety in pilotage training, licensing, procedures, and equipment. We do this via Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programs, industry-leading Conferences, publishing Codes of Best Practice, active engagement with Regulators and the Peer Assistance Network (PAN).
AMPI is deeply saddened by the recent incident in Baltimore involving the container ship MV Dali. Our sympathies and condolences go out to all those affected by the tragedy – the families of those impacted, the community of Baltimore, the crew, marine pilots and the first responders. We echo the position of many in the shipping industry that it is of paramount importance to care for the people involved.
As an organisation, AMPI has been asked to comment on the incident. However, we urge all to show restraint, avoid speculation and assumptions and give space to the United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and relevant authorities to conduct their investigations.
Pilotage standards in Australia are amongst the highest in the world. AMPI stands ready to work with industry stakeholders to use any lessons learned from this tragic event to continue to improve the processes that ensure the safety and security of trade.
