Mentoring Services

The Australian Maritime Mentoring Program is a collaborative effort involving key maritime organisations such as the Australasian Marine Pilots Institute, the Nautical Institute, the Company of Master Mariners of Australia, Offshore and Specialist Ships Australia, and the Pilbara Ports Authority.

This initiative aims to bridge the gap between newcomers to the maritime industry and seasoned professionals, offering guidance and support as they navigate career pathways and challenges.

We have purposely elected to have only one prerequisite to become a mentee and that is to be a member of one of the participating organisations – The Nautical Institute (member, associate member or student member), Company of Master Mariners of Australia, the Australasian Marine Pilots Institute (associate member), Offshore & Specialist Ships Australia, and Pilbara Ports Authority (employee or cadet).

Our program is completely free, all that we ask is for motivation and dedication from both parties.

Our Mentoring Program Seeks to:

Assist, encourage, and support mentees in advancing through their careers to become competent and confident maritime professionals.
Promote personal development and diversity within the maritime industry.
Foster a vibrant maritime community in Australia.
Encourage membership in participating organizations.
Ensure ongoing engagement in the training and development of seafarers.
Enhance the reputation of participating organizations.

Mentee Eligiability

To participate in the program, individuals must meet the following criteria:
- Associate Member of the Australasian Marine Pilots Institute, or
- Member, Associate Member or Student Member of the Nautical Institute, or
- Member of the Company of Master Mariners of Australia.
- Member of Offshore & Specialist Ships Australia
In addition, you must be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident.

My time in the mentoring program has been extremely positive. I have been paired with Tony, a strong mentor, who has experienced a similar career pathway to myself. He has shared his experiences with me and provided me with relevant and helpful advice to progress my career as both a Master and future Marine Pilot hopeful.

I truly have only positive things to say about the program. It’s one of the best initiatives I've encountered in Australia, and I believe the future of our seafaring industry relies on mentorship programs like these to build confident, competent professionals.

My experience in the mentoring program has only been positive, with great advice and words of encouragement from my mentor Adam. He shares his experience and is always ready to help out in any way he can. I am now on the right path in order to become master and, eventually, a future pilot.

Upon joining the mentoring program, I was paired with Jo Clark. From our first coffee together, Jo has helped redefine work goals in order to more closely align with my dream of becoming a pilot. Jo has helped to guide me through job offers, and helped to steer me towards work places that will help get to give me that valuable expertise that pilots require. This program is unreal and if anyone is thinking about becoming a pilot, I would highly recommend checking out the mentoring program.
