Background

In 2009, the AMPI Annual General Meeting in Fremantle recognised that AMPI has a pivotal role in building a resilient safety culture within the profession.  AMPI sought guidance and examples from several aligned professions like Engineers Australia and commercial airline aviator groups.  AMPI noted that Qantas airline pilots had a successful structure in the form of a Peer Assistance Network (PAN).  This peer network serves to support a resilient safety culture.  Consequently, AMPI funded and built a similar network of peers.

Psychological Support

Psychological support and training was initially provided by Rod Jepsen and Marcus Romanic.  On the retirement of Marcus in 2024 the Board invited Keith McGregor to take over the role.  Keith is a registered psychologist based in Wellington, New Zealand.  His background includes twelve years as an officer and psychologist in the New Zealand air force and thirty eight  years in private practice.  Keith’s interest in peer support dates back to the early 1980’s and he is currently part of the NZ aviation peer assistance network.

Why should I talk to a PAN Volunteer?

The work of the marine pilot is inherently stressful both operationally and domestically.  There is research indicating that when facing life challenges people who try to cope on their own are less successful than those who have a ‘safe harbour’ to share and discuss their concerns.  The PAN volunteers are able to listen without interrupting; they don’t pass judgment nor do they try to tell you how to solve the problem.  They also understand the reality of heading out in the middle of the night to board a pitching vessel in the pouring rain to work with a bridge crew who struggle to communicate.

Confidentiality

Everything shared with a PAN volunteer is treated in strict confidence.  An exception is if there is evidence of potential harm to self or others or illegal activity.  In these instances the PAN volunteer will mention their concerns with the caller and discuss the best course of action.

Getting Support

Marine pilots are self-reliant individuals who like to get the job done with minimum fuss and bother but they have no hesitation calling for towage to assist with a tricky berthing.  Calling for PAN support in times of personal challenge is no different.  There are occasions when the wisest and safest option is to email or call one of the volunteers listed below and simply say, “I think it could be good to organise a time for us to have a chat
